nights of lessons each semester. For those of you who came both days last week,

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>Gender Roles: </b>Over the past couple of weeks, we
recognize that misunderstandings regarding "male" and
"female" roles have made several members of our community
uncomfortable. We want to offer our apologies and provide some context in an
effort to create a more welcoming environment for everyone. Historically,
ballroom dancing partnerships were recognized to be between a man, as the leader,
and a woman, as the follower. Although the community has progressed
significantly, remnants of this traditionally gendered view still remain. Our
club holds the view that this terminology is metaphorical/symbolic and that the
words "man" and "woman" or other similarly gendered terms
should be understood to mean initiator(leader) and responder(follower). <b>We
wholeheartedly support initiators and responders of every gender.</b>

dancers who competed in Columbus, Ohio this weekend (See pic below)!! It was
great to be out on the competition floor again! We will be traveling back to
Columbus in November to compete at Ohio Star Ball! Keep an eye out for more
information, and be sure to inquire with any of the officers and/or veterans if

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>Membership Dues</b>: All dancers receive<b> two free
lessons</b> anytime during the semester (NOT including last week's
recruitment events). After that, lessons are <b>$40 for students </b>(regardless
of grade and/or school) and <b>$80 for non-students</b> for the
entire semester. Please bring cash or a check made out to "<span class="gmail-il">CMU</span> Ballroom Dance Team". NO VENMO. Payment of
lessons signs you up as a Ballroom Dance Club Member, enabling you to attend
any lessons, come to socials, and be subsidized for competitions throughout
the semester!</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"> </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>Levels and Auditions: </b>The club will not be
holding auditions this semester. For the professionally taught Advanced,
Intermediate, and Newcomer lessons, we recommend people <b>brand new to
ballroom dance to attend the Newcomer level</b>. Dancers around a <b>Bronze
level should attend the Intermediate</b> lessons, and dancers<b> Silver
and above should attend the Advanced level</b>. If you feel like you fall
between two levels, we recommend you attend both classes for the first two
weeks to see which is better suited to your level, and stick with that one for
the rest of the semester.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"> </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>Styles: </b>You will notice that our lessons are
split into four different styles of dancing. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>International Standard</b> and <b>American
Smooth</b> lessons take place on Mondays (Tuesday this week). These are
the "princess" dances including waltz, tango, foxtrot, quickstep,
etc. They move around the floor, stay mostly "in-frame", and are
performed with long ballgowns. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>International Latin</b> and <b>American Rhythm</b> lessons
take place on Wednesdays. These are the "sassy" dances including
chacha, rumba, jive, swing, samba, etc. These are more stationary, use more
"hand-holds", and are performed with short skirts. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>We teach all four styles</b> and encourage our
dancers to take advantage of this variety!</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>Shoes & Attire: </b>You do not need anything
special to come dance! You will see many dancers wear various types of ballroom
specific shoes and/or attire. These things will be available to borrow and/or
buy later in the semester. For now, we ask that you <b>please wear
athletic/comfortable shoes and clothes</b>. Sandals fall off, and jeans
restrict movement. Both are highly discouraged. Some of our professional
instructors may prefer that you dance in socks, so be ready for that if you are
comfortable. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"> </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><b>Partnering: </b>As always, <b>no partner or
experience is necessary</b>! We encourage everyone to rotate partners and get
to know everyone throughout each lesson! For more advanced dancers interested
in competing with a dedicated partner, we encourage you to attend lessons and
start talking to people! We will do our best to assist with partnerships, but
there is no formal partnering process. </p>
