<div dir="ltr">Just to clarify, I was looking for the best/easiest/most efficient method to open the files submitted through Schoology. Schoology handles the files no problem. I am not familiar with Schoology, but I am guessing that it recognizes that a .a2w file is actually a compressed file (similar to a .zip), and is trying to do an automatic expansion.<br>
<br>
One solution, though slightly tedious, would be to have your students put their project in a folder, zip up that folder, and then submit the zipped folder. An advantage to this is that you could also have them submit some form of documentation about their project that wold be included in the folder.<br>
<br>
Other members of the community may have better suggestions.<br>

I've been using Schoology with Alice files for 3 years. It's clean and<br>
organized and once you get the steps down, grading goes fairly fast.<br>
<br>
A student simply submits their Alice .a2w file. As the teacher, I download<br>
that file and double-click on it to open it in Alice and run/evaluate their<br>
program. If you haven't told Windows to use Alice to open a2w files, then<br>
you might have to go into Alice and use File/Open to open the file instead<br>
of double-clicking. Nothing else is needed.<br>
<br>
My students turn in Office files, Google Docs, Scratch files, and of course<br>
Alice files all into Schoology.<br>

I agree with your suggestion to try this, which could be the problem. The other problem Schoology presents is that (I believe) it sets by default a smallish limit on the maximum file size allowed for student uploads. The work-arounds I have used have been to either have smaller worlds for students to upload (no sound files, simpler models), or asking for the limit to be raised.<br>

I guess I am fortunate in that my classroom is also a computer lab, so<br>
often, when grading, I grade the student projects at their computer while<br>
sitting beside them. This also allows me to give instant feedback, make<br>
suggestions, try things, etc... I've found it to be a pretty effective<br>
teaching tool as well.<br>

I'm not sure if this relates to your situation or not.<br>

I teach for an on-line school and often give my students "starter files" which they are to complete for an assignment. Depending on their computer and/or browser, sometimes these files get downloaded as compressed. When my students (or I) receive a compressed Alice file, I have them NOT extract it (it makes a mess when they double click to open it). Open Alice first, then go to File -> Open World -> go to the file. Alice extracts the file automatically. I tell them this process is "going in the back door".<br>

I am not familiar with Schoology, but I am guessing that it recognizes that a .a2w file is actually a compressed file (similar to a .zip), and is trying to do an automatic expansion.<br>

One solution, though slightly tedious, would be to have your students put their project in a folder, zip up that folder, and then submit the zipped folder. An advantage to this is that you could also have them submit some form of documentation about their project that wold be included in the folder.<br>
<br>
Other members of the community may have better suggestions.<br>

At this point, our file size is less than 2 MB. We are just in Chapter 2.<br>
I think I've got a handle on it. It wasn't an Alice issue I just had to<br>
figure out where Schoology was downloading the student files.<br>
