Hi, all -- yes, Susan -- I have used the duke site myself to learn Alice. I was referring to the site which has solutions, etc. Several times this has been referred to on this list. I emailed the person named in those references and received no answer of any kind (no bounced e-mail, either).<div>

Would it be possible to do both on the same site? An open section for everyone, especially students, and a secure area with a logon for teachers. Having them both on the same site would be great. I have a few students that are working ahead independently, and a single resource would be great.<br>
<br>
Just want to tell you once again what a success Alice has been here in EC. We have used Alice to get the technology ball rolling and it has delivered. In fact, I have several students this year who are not in the programming class, but are working through the course on their own, just following along with what we are doing. I have quite a few students who have installed it at home, and are really making progress. One student told me just yesterday, that last weekend she went on a 9 hour car trip with her family to visit relatives and spent the entire car ride working on Alice! To me that's amazing, for a high school student. That's been another bonus. Last year, our first year with programming, the class was all males. This year, we have quite a few young ladies taking programming. We were able to do some encouraging last year, demonstrating with Alice, and it paid off.<br>

But the point of having a differentiated guide is to all students, no matter their ability to use the software to fulfil their imagination and potential.<br>
<br>
As teachers/educators we have to ensure that every student can make progress and for some that means easy to access guides that they can use themselves without having to constantly call us over and give them some independence when they come across a problem that could very easily disrupt the lesson, their learning, their self esteem etc<br>

I'm a simple home-schooling father trying to teach my kids Alice v3, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I don't see what the concern is with having problem/exercise solutions available to students. Don't they still have to follow certain steps to create the videos? Don't you factor into exercises a certain amount of creativity which throws a wrench into standardized tests or solutions that could be copied? Once kids are out of school: life is an "open book test". Some kids will always try to cheat their way through a class. They will reap what they sow. Just move on. Life's too short.<br>

I say, let information be free. There are enough road blocks and undocumented features in Alice to stop even us teachers dead in our tracks (until Don is able to come to our rescue) without us making programming that much harder.<br>

Could you tell us something about your machines? PC / Mac / Linux? Version of the OS? If these are PC, did you try and use Slow and Steady Alice, which comes with the PC download?<br>

Is this error repeatable? In other words, do you have specific worlds in which the same error always happens at the same place? If so, could you send us the world with the error message? If it seems more random, could you try and get a screen capture video of the running world with the error, and then send us the world and the screen capture so we can see what is going on?<br>

Alice 3.1 models are significantly restructured. This restructuring includes a consistent internal skeletal and joint structure for each super class in the gallery (Biped, Quadruped, Flyer, Swimmer, Prop). The consistent internal structure allows for a class hierarchy needed for more faithful implementation of inheritance (an object-oriented concept) than does Alice 2. (Note that introductory students do not need this feature but more advanced student do.)<br>
<br>
The design of Alice 3 gallery models is joints-based (rather than subparts-based as used in Alice 2). Creating animations using components of an object now involves manipulation of the joints of an object instead of the sub-parts of an object. This may seem to be a subtle change, but it allows the use of a soft-skin for the models, creating more realistic animations when a component of a model is animated. For example, an object kicking its leg outward will no longer move outside its clothing, exposing a bare leg.<br>

This redesign of the gallery means that worlds created in Alice2.x, and worlds created in Alice 3.0 Beta , can not be imported into Alice 3.1. The models are fundamentally different, and there is no conversion utility currently planned that would support such a conversion.<br>
<br>
Part of this is also aesthetic. The Alice 3 environment models are richer, with much higher polygon counts, and "smooth-skinning", much more complex to become Alice 2 models in the Alice 2.x Virtual Machine.<br>

It seems that the World function "int (what) as string" disappeared<br>
in the Alice 2.2 03/01/2012 Windows release. Can anyone offhand<br>
confirm that, and whether it's back in the 2.3 release? Or have way<br>
of using "(what) as string" that doesn't show decimal<br>
points? Unfortunately I'm stuck with that version for the school<br>
year because I had to freeze my image in June.<br>
