From wbarnum at elmhurst205.org Tue Feb 14 12:15:01 2023 From: wbarnum at elmhurst205.org (Barnum, William) Date: Tue, 14 Feb 2023 11:15:01 -0600 Subject: alice-teacher Suggestion For Video About Learning Technology Center Message-ID: Hey all, I had a suggestion for the Entertainment Technology Center, but I don't know with whom to share it. Most high school students not only don't know what the Entertainment Technology Center is but don't even know that people are doing the types of things you do. If they did, they might be more likely to take a computer science class in high school. When trying to attract potential students to take a computer science or programming course, I sometimes show this *highly polished video about CS-X from Northwestern *. My goal is to get potential students thinking about all the diverse things they can do with computer science, but it also has the potential to get them thinking about Northwestern when the time comes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNo_BVzNb28 It would be awesome to have a conceptually similar video from the Entertainment Technology Center. It would benefit me to get students with a more artistic bend thinking about CS and make them aware of the ETC if and when they consider a graduate program. I started by gathering students remotely during the pandemic here in the EU. Now I have some Ukrainian kids online. Everyone is very enthusiastic, but they are technologically undernourished. They would like to do a lot with technology, but they don't get teachers who would teach with passion and understanding of children. Today we can unite ALL students around the world. However, video alone is not enough. We have to invest a lot of effort in persuading and advertising the idea. There are no problems with children, but with adults. It is very difficult to get sponsors, donors, and teachers. Today, technology is an extremely broad science, which is why most children approach technology spontaneously. But... it's only a matter of time before AI takes over everything. It's a shame that students' access to technology and instruction can be the limiting factor.
