Thanks for sharing this.
Looking at the code, both in this project and in Alice, I can't see where a negative value would come from.
It has not happened on my machine, so diagnosis is more difficult.

I am wondering if there is an error in the animation logic that is somehow overshooting the target value.
(I am kind of grasping at straws, but this code is complex enough to be suspect.)

Is there anything you can say about the machines where the problem is seen?
What OS are they running?
Are they especially underpowered or overworked?

Experiments you might try, if you are so inclined:
- Have the ogres say the size they being set to and see if that matches you see.
- Change the resize duration to 0, to bypass the animation logic and see if it still happens.

Wish I could provide a clear answer for you. Hopefully we can eventually.
