I thumbed it up on YouTube, since I don?t have Twitter. I noticed that in VR the objects have shadows. That is already an improvement over the Alice IDE. James ? Hey all, Thanks so much for the feedback on the draft video of the Alice VR program demos! I wanted to share a few things I learned from my experience: 1. When I first imported a student project into VR, I was disappointed. It seemed less realistic. One student had created a neat narrative that depended on tight camera angles that focused on only what she wanted the viewer to see. It ruined the illusion when I could swivel my head to control the view because it didn't look right from different angles. It was kind of like if your favorite TV show turned the camera 5 degrees, and you could see the wood holding up the fake walls to the fake room. I realized that we needed to consider all possible camera angles when designing worlds. 2. The Alice Unity player doesn't work exactly the same as the desktop Alice player. In some cases, sloppy or processor-intensive code which didn't cause problems on the desktop player caused issues with the Unity player. I didn't realize that until students tried out their worlds, and we had to troubleshoot on the fly. Doing it again, I will install the Alice Unity player on each student's desktop and have them try their programs out ahead of time without VR goggles. That way, we can work out the bugs before we try it with the VR headset. 3. I've tweeted out the final version of the video. Any likes, comments, or retweets on the tweet would be humbly appreciated. ? https://twitter.com/Bill_Barnum/status/1465351712386871298?s=20 Bill This e-mail message contains information that may be confidential and is the property of the Board of Education of Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205. It can however run as a desktop VR using the link cord to connect it to a desktop. This cord can be purchased separately or I believe the charging cord that comes with it may work for this purpose when removed from the plug component. If you have it connected to a desktop there is an Oculus desktop application that will power it. It is not an application that you need to purchase. If you look at this page you will see the download software button associated with the section: Oculus link: To play Oculus Rift content on Quest 2, install the Oculus App on a compatible gaming computer, then connect your headset using the Oculus Link cable or similar high-quality USB 3 cable. You can think of Alice VR as Oculus Rift content since it currently runs on desktop. If you have this application up and running and you are viewing the home screen in the headset associated with this application then when you launch the Alice Player it will take over the headset and you will see the Alice VR landing space and menu. I installed the Oculus software that seems to handle it all, Oculus Setup.exe . All 4 of those links on the page d'l the same installer, currently 4954 Kb.. The installer then loads the app. Running the app 1st time, connect using FB account or Oculus account. It then asks for what type of headset you're using so I went with Quest2. You can also add other headsets in the app once it's running. In the Oculus App Settings, Beta, turn ON AirLink. In the headset click on Quick settings zone near the clock on the left of the taskbar, open up the Settings gearwheel in the upper Right and toggle AirPlay. In the headset, connect to the PC, press launch, and launch the Alice Player. The Underwater Explore and Amazon BoatRide worked flawlessly. Very cool, tea anyone? The VR Desktop app from Oculus ($19.99) shows a panel in the headset that you can adjust size, tilt, curve and set its vehicle to the headset. You could create a deeply immersive viewpoint similar to sitting really close at the movie theater. (I'll be "returning" mine in favor of AirLink. I'm sure I could re-buy it if ever needed) The corded method with the PC worked just like the AirLink. I had to uncheck all the AirLink connections and connect via the wire. It asked to run Rift apps on the Quest or some such setting when it started up. Once it was all connected, launch AlicePlayer.exe. Same total immersion as the AirLink. This is where my prog 1 classes will be living until the end of the semester. Thank you all so much for your help. I'll post up vids or projects during exam week at the end of January. If not, sooner. The AirLink works well on a secured wifi network. The cord works well too (unsecured wifi at school). Latest developments throw me an exception w henever there is a mouse listener event so no clicking on things 9for now). We changed our code to just use proximity listeners and it works well to get something started. Here's a file attached I recently built for demo, Have a Happy Holiday Season, lmk if anyone wants to collaborate off the email chain.
