From vanderhyde at sxu.edu Mon Sep 14 11:40:03 2020 From: vanderhyde at sxu.edu (Vanderhyde, James) Date: Mon, 14 Sep 2020 15:40:03 +0000 Subject: alice-teacher "Many small programs" in Alice Message-ID: Dear Alice teachers, I am trying to improve my "CS 0.5? pre-CS 1 Alice course in terms of pass rate and in terms of preparation for Java. We have this optional course called Virtual Worlds that many students take in spring of their first year in college, in the hopes that it will prepare them somewhat for Java the following fall. Last year I had something of an unacceptable pass rate in Virtual Worlds, and I am looking to improve the course. One thing that interests me is the ?many small programs? approach some are taking in early programming courses (for example, https://www.asee.org/public/conferences/140/papers/27535/view). The many small programs approach relies on auto grading of Java or other code to give students a lot of rapid feedback. This is a problem with Alice, because it can?t be auto graded (to my knowledge), and it is slow for me to open and check everyone?s projects. Does anyone have any ideas that could work for Alice? The best idea I have so far is to write lots of small quizzes with multiple-choice answers. The quiz questions would either be ?What does this code do?? or ?Which line of code is correct to make this behavior?? and such things. Does anyone have lots of quiz questions like this? Or any other ideas? James ? Everything seems to work except when you drag in a person from the Sims, the people builder. We get the error "failed to initialize art assets". Dragging in non-Sims bipeds work fine or other objects. Anyone know what this error is? Do they need to redo the install? They are going to stop selling The Rift S because the newest Quest can do everything it can do and more. If you wanted to connect your desktop (to run the Alice Player, for example) to the Quest there is a link cord that can be purchased. Eric is not sure if they will start including this link cord with the purchase once the Rift is officially discontinued. The Alice Player would run over the Link as would any other desktop-only VR apps for the Oculus ecosystem. We are assuming that since they are planning on continuing to sell the Rift till next year they would also have to support it further into the future than that. Eric has not purchased the Link for his Quest but is planning on doing so to verify there is no issue. We also hope to support loading content without the link cord in the future. Please let us know if you have any other questions. We are receiving reports that our newest release running on a MacBook air is crashing when sims characters are added to the scene. We unfortunately don?t have ready access to a machine. If you have a MacBook air and are willing to work with us to evaluate this issue it would are greatly appreciated. Please just reach out to me directly. We would also love to hear of any other reports of this issue. Specifically what OS is being run to to see if that is a component of the issue.
