From kellyt at bishopireton.org Fri Mar 13 08:51:05 2020 From: kellyt at bishopireton.org (Kelly, Terri) Date: Fri, 13 Mar 2020 08:51:05 -0400 Subject: alice-teacher Help with Netbeans PlugIn Message-ID: Is there someone who can help with getting the netbeans plugin installed? I am running into a problem I cannot seem to find an answer to. (I have the plugin on my school laptop, but I cannot get it installed on my desktops in my lab) When I try to install the plug in, I receive a message from the installer that some other plugins are required. When I try to find the plug-ins to install them, I come up empty. I have a feeling this is very simple and that I am just overlooking something, but I do not have time to dive deeply into this and I think someone probably has already done it and could easily just tell me what I have overlooked. I have administrator privileges in my classroom, but IT does most of the heavy lifting with installation of software. Unfortunately, they are not willing to really help with this, and are assuming I can handle it - but, I truly just do not know enough about how plug ins and ides work. The message states "Some plugins require plugin XXXX to be installed" ... and XXXX is Common Annotations, Progress API, Javac API Wrapper, Editor Code Completion, and the list goes on. I thought perhaps the Netbeans installation had not been complete and that I would need to go find these plugins, but searching for "Common Annotations" did not work, so ... alas. We are running NetBeans with Java 1.8 on both Windows and Mac and the plugin is operating. We would also suggest updating NetBeans from 8.1 to 8.2, although we don't think it would be the source of this problem. The least likely suspect (to our eye) is the java 12 hanging around, but if NetBeans is not using it there should be no conflict. Please keep us posted? With the large efforts being done by educators to migrate teaching to virtual classrooms we wanted to see what we could do to help. A couple quick things that we hope you all could do to help us and each other: 1. If you are using Alice and migrated to a virtual classroom if you could share any approaches, tips, tricks, resources, or stories with the community that would be great! Just reply here to share or feel free to send our way direct and we can share it out. 2. We are thinking about starting weekly Alice Q and A?s or workshops for educators or even students on Alice. If you think this would be of interest to you please let us know so we can gauge interest and need. We are hosting a short basics of Alice via our local intermediary unity tomorrow that any are welcome to join (these are definitely targeted at educators): https://www.aiu3.net/Page/4914 and we will continue to keep our eyes out for other hosting online events for Alice to share with you all and definitely don?t be shy about sharing opportunities with this list. 3. If you or your students are continuing to work with Alice please share their work with us so we can connect everyone. You can send to us directly or through our facebook or twitter (#programWithAlice). We would very much be interested to hear if anyone is using Alice to challenge students to make worlds about social distancing or other social impact narratives. 4. We have had many inquiries about Alice and chrome books now that many students are limited to the home and their one to one chrome books. Unfortunately as many of you know Alice is a desktop Java application so this is not supported. We understand that this limits us for many but hope that it also helps those communities where internet connectivity may be a challenges we can we can fill another need. The Alice Team is here to help you, your parents, and your students. Don?t hesitate to reach out to us and this community with questions or ideas for how we can better serve you all. I developed with others a deck of Notable Women in Computing cards, 54 playing cards, each with a different woman in computing. A group called soitaired has taken the cards and created an online solitaire game with the cards. I have copied them below? Keith may have more thoughts or input on this... )> For those of you who may be interested... After many attempts, I am happy to report that Alice 3 (the latest version) is running on the Chromebook! Linux is running in a window, so you can toggle between Linux and Chrome without rebooting. All credit and thanks to Steve Audia at CMU - Steve's patience through this process was amazing! Additionally, thanks and credit to Eric Brown for your input and for making the connections. The process does require Developer mode, and that may be sticky for IT Staff in school districts, but it does work. This is not as complicated as it may seem. There are 3 main steps - run the Ubuntu install, update Linux & install java, then install Alice. This is only one method of making this work, there are others. If you find other methods, please share them with the list. Installing the Linux version of Alice on a Chromebook 1. Follow the steps to install Linux Ubuntu using Crouton found here: https://www.lifewire.com/install-linux-on-chromebook-4125253 Once Linux is up and running, you may have to reboot the system, so go ahead and do that. (Follow directions on Crouton install) 2. After rboot, in a terminal window on Linux, run: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install software-properties-common python-software-properties sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer 3. Alice Download Alice 3 for Linux from Alice.org The remainder is from Alice.org : Linux: the Linux shell script does not start the installer right away. Follow these steps: Open the Terminal, and go to the directory where you have downloaded Alice. Type chmod +x Alice3_unix_Offline_3_2_5_0_0.sh Type ./Alice3_unix_Offline_3_2_5_0_0.sh Installation will start in a few seconds 4. Alice 2 Click on Download Alice 2.x for Linux for the appropriate gallery version of Alice 2.x. After the download is complete, unzip the downloaded file. Place the complete uncompressed directory in the desired location on your machine. Open the Alice 2.x directory Find the Required directory in the Alice 2.x directory and open it Double-click the run-alice file in the Required directory (you may wish to create a short-cut for this file to place on your desktop). If Alice does not start, you may need to reset the classpath for the Java location on your machine. -Keith Al the best, Don Slater Alice Project > On Mar 26, 2020, at 11:40 AM, Stanton, Karen wrote: > > Hi there; > > My campus just purchased 50 Chromebooks and we are about to set them up for student use. This required logging on in Developer Mode and I do not think school IT staff would allow students in Developer mode. For that reason, I would not recommend this for students on school issued Chromebook devices. This would typically require working with the IT Staff to accomplish the proper setup, which might be doable in the classroom, but certainly presents greater challenges with student devices and they are not in school. All that being said, and this is probably reaching too, but an easier path may be to check and see if the students have access to a computer - PC, MAC, or Linux, at home that the parents would allow an install of Alice 2.x or 3.x. I'm in the process of surveying my students now for a class (different subject) where this would be necessary for the software I want to use in that class. Hope that helps in some way. We can always tweak it or try something different if it doesn?t work. We are going to start holding weekly Alice lessons and question and answer sesssions on zoom. It is intended for educators and parents so please share out as you see fit to people you think would be interested. There is no registration required. You can read more about it here: Alice Weekly Zoom Resources https://www.alice.org/alice-weekly-zoom-resources/ Like I said maybe they are spread out over too much time or are at the wrong time of day but we just wanted to start doing something. I will try to record each session and share them out after the fact, or possibly stream for those without zoom, as I start to feel out interest and get feedback from all of you we can work together to make them more useful. Stay safe everyone. Sincerely, Eric
