We are super excited to launch the beta of the player!  You can read more about it here (it reiterates some of the things I shared with this mailing list in our last update):

We will definitely be rolling out updates more regularly now as we squash bugs and implement more VR controls.  I will continue to send out mail updates to this list so keep a look out for those.

I apologies for the delay and any pain it caused teachers that were counting on an earlier release for use with your students.  Please let us know any and all feedback and we would love for you to share with us your experiences.

I want to thank everyone that took the time to fill out our educator/administrator survey.  This information will be very valuable to us. Robert,
TheAlice 3  VR-Beta release has just come out,

This release currently supports the Oculus Rift and Rift S and the HTC Vive with limited functionality. See the web page listed above for more details. All that I can add to what is on the page is that you will need a computer that will run Oculus (which I understand is Windows only) and for the Vive you will need Steam and the Steam plug-in.

The computer I used when working with the Oculus version was very beefy. I do not know what the minimum specs would be, but I do not think that the Alice Player really increase the machine spec requirements much more than Oculus itself.

If you are looking for next year, we would like to be supporting other VR platforms, but the timing on their implementation is still to be determined.

Eric Brown, Director of the Alice Project, may have more thoughts.

Everyone,
I have tested Alice 2 And Alice 3 and Catalina and this is what I found.

Alice 3 seems to run without any problems.

The first time I ran Alice 2 it hung up. But after I restarted the machine, Alice 2 was able to run. But I found on my machine that the File Open directory no longer allowed me to navigate through my computer?s file system to locate and open Alice projects. 

I believe that this has to do with Catalina?s increased security measures, and that there is a preference setting that will eventually correct this. We are still tracking down exactly what that setting will be.

I found double-clicking on any Alice 2 project file from the Finder of the computer will open the project in Alice 2. If this does not work the first time, you may have to right-click (Control-click) the project and select the Open With option. After you identify Alice 2 as the app associated with the file, the system should remember that .a2w files are opened with Alice 2.

We will be interested in hearing what anyone else havs found, or of any other issues you have identified.

We have released a new version of the player + VR Beta.  This release includes a number of improvements and fixes to the base desktop player and the inclusion of a number of new VR controls for Oculus.  The ability to program point and click interactions and  button presses opens up all new possibilities! Take a look:

Don?t forget to grab both the updated export version of the Alice IDE and the player.
