There is trouble importing billboards and custom models because there is virtually no access to the file system of your computer using Alice?s regular menu? That is what I am finding on my machine. In fact I cannot open any saved worlds from directly within Alice and its file system, but instead, I must double-click on the saved project file, and then it will open in Alice. Fortunately, I am able to save new projects created in Alice. There are settings in System Preferences Security that are supposed to provide apps with different levels of access, but I have yet to find the correct settings for Alice 2. I have found one solution, but I am not sure that it will work in your classroom environment. It turns out that Alice is actually launched by a small app called JavaAppLauncher. A lot of the following may depend on the administrative privileges you do or do not have on your machine. I have full privileges on my machine, and I am not able to test it on a machine that may be more locked down. On your Mac, find the Alice 2.5 app and right click on it 1) Select ?Show Package Contents? 2) Open the ?Contents? folder 3) Open the MacOS folder You will see ?JavaAppLauncher?. If you were to click on this, it will Launch (1) first a Terminal Window, and then (2) Alice 2. You may be asked if you wish to grant Alice permission to access your Desktop and Documents. Grant the permission. You should now be able to import a model, images from a billboard, and open save project files using the Alice access to the computer?s file system. If this works for you, right-click on ?JavaAppLauncher?, and select ?Make Alias? from the menu. You can then move this alias to the Desktop. Double-clicking on this launcher will then launch Alice (and the terminal). In fact, I have attached my copy of this alias for you to test on your machine. It may work, if you have Alice installed in the default location on your machine, in the Applications folder. Another teacher who tried this says it does work, but it took Alice 5 minutes to launch. I will be curious as to your results.. We recognize that is not a satisfactory solution and are working on a better solution. Any feedback you can provide us will be helpful. In answer to your question about the future of Alice 2, it is probably safe to say that the clock is ticking. (Of course, as with any piece of software, as soon as it is released, the clock starts ticking.) As a small team, we will not be able to continue to support Alice 2 through every and all future releases. We will try to make the necessary tweaks for future software releases as long as possible, but Catalina may be the first shot across the bow. I hope that we get this issue figured out, and that Alice 2 remains with us for some time. But preparing for a transition is not a bad idea. Steve Cooper and Susan Rodger have prepared a course in Coursera, designed for teach Alice 3 along the lines of an Alice 2 course. I believe it is scheduled to be released in January. I have been a beta tester for the course, and I believe that it is worth checking out. Thank you for all you do to help support the Alice Community. I've been using it for several years, along with the Dann, Cooper, and Pausch textbook. These seem to be a good fit for my course and my students, so I'd like to continue. Are you planning to update Alice 2 as needed so it will work with future OS upgrades? Message-ID: Dear All, Alice Player Update We have recently pushed up a new version of the Alice Player! This version is greatly improved and ready for you all to check out. We highly recommend you take your favorite worlds and run them in the player (now in maximized full screen with shadows!). Checking out worlds in full screen and in VR could be a great end of semester activity and treat! http://www.alice.org/get-alice/alice-3-beta-vr/ We have enjoyed running one of our recent Alice Challenge winners Bear Quest (http://www.alice.org/featured-projects/alice-regional-challenge-middle-school-finalists/). Hint 1: Try to cross the bridge early to trigger a condition Hint 2: The quiz answers have to be exact (I may have to ask her to change this to be includes not equals - I gave up and cheated by looking at the code) VR now has the interface built in so you can navigate worlds inside the headset. We have also implemented all controller inputs for Oculus Rift and most for the HTC Vive. Up next we are working on the ability to author hand objects in Alice so you can use them for vehicling objects and in collision detection events to the controllers. PS. We are working hard to iron out all of the bugs but please review the page for known issues. We are hoping you can start helping us test since the more cases we have of an issue often helps us figure out what is going on. We are still working on the functionality of the Sims People so unfortunately they are still immovable mannequins. If you are starting new projects that want to use the player or VR avoiding their inclusion for now helps (we are close we hope). PAsmart Grant Call for Partners We are also in the process of exploring opportunities to partner with PA schools, districts and LEAs on a PAsmart Grant. As a teacher, I could look and see the original file was created by the user BBarnum. Even in classrooms where everyone was using the same username, it is unlikely that they would be creating the file during the same millisecond. Alice was written in Java. This means that the Alice Classes are also descendants of the Java Object class. But the top-level class as far as Alice is concerned is the SThing class. You may see the a visual representation of the Alice Class Hierarchy when you try to create a variable or parameter in Alice and select Gallery Class... from the value type menu. (See attached screen shot Select Gallery Class Type). This will open the Gallery Class dialog box that has three panels. (See attached screenshot Alice Class Hierarchy). The left panel, Filtering will list all the objects currently in the Scene. The middle panel, Selection, will display the entire Java Class Library, highlighting the tree or hierarchy from SThing to selected Class. (You do not have to select an object to see a path, you may directly click on any class in the Selection panel.) The right panel will display the Available Procedures, Functions, and Properties for that class, showing which of these are available only to that class and those that have been inherited for parent classes in the hierarchy. A quasi-API as it were. This design allows the user to decide the most appropriate type to select for that variable / parameter, based on the type of the object, the Class of objects, or the functionality needed. As users you are only able to write methods for the displayed Gallery classes (Biped, Quadruped, Slitherer, White Rabbit, madHatter, etc) within the Alice System However, if the project had been exported to NetBeans, the entire Java Class Hierarchy is available, and you would be able to write procedures on any class at any level in the Alice Class Hierarchy. Please let us know if you have any questions or would like more details.
