Sue,
A problem in the download system, is that when the download progress bar shows the completion of the progress bar, one thinks that the process is over. However, the download only copies the EnglishGallery .zip file to the gallery directory of the Required directory in the Alice package (take a look and you will probably see it.) Many have and will believe that when the download progress bar is complete, the Gallery is ready. It is not. 

What we are not yet showing in this Gallery download process is that Alice will then unzip this downloaded file. The downloaded file has to unzip. When the uncompression is completed, Alice will then show a “Restart Alice” dialog box.

After restarting Alice, the English Gallery will then be displayed in the Scene editor.

Follow (repeat) these steps:

1) Go to Help emu - > Software Updates 

2) Select download English Gallery 

3) Let the entire process complete… This will take some time - the complete gallery is actually very large (almost 400+ MB

4) The process is complete when you see the "Restart Alice" dialog box.
