alice-teacher Variables

I tell my 7th graders that it is a place to store information that you will need later.  We tell the computer what to call that place and the computer finds empty space and uses our name to identify it.  Each variable has a type so that the computer will know how to use it.

I am having a hard time explaining to one of my students EXACTLY what a variable is and I told him to refer to the book but it made it more confusing for him. So could somebody please give me a simple yet concise answer?
