Please find the talk details below: Title: AI Descriptions of Visual Content Taken by People With Visual Impairments: The Past Decade and What’s Next Abstract: A natural grand challenge for the AI community is to create computer vision models that can assist people with vision impairments to learn about visual content. In this talk, I will begin by discussing my team’s work on building the first public AI challenges around data originating from visually impaired photographers who authentically were trying to learn about their visual surroundings. I will address questions including: What are the key challenges for creating large-scale datasets when using data coming from authentic use cases? What is the current performance of AI models in analyzing images taken by people with vision impairments? What are the key AI challenges ahead for developing solutions to support users of visual description technologies? Bio: Dr. Danna Gurari is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at University of Colorado Boulder and Founding Director of the Image and Video Computing group. Her expertise is in computer vision, human computer interaction, accessibility, and (bio)medical data analysis, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches. Her research has resulted in over 60 peer-reviewed articles at top academic journals and conferences, with several papers earning awards at venues such as WACV, CHI, CSCW, ASIS&T, HCOMP, MICCAI, and AAPM. Her work is supported by diverse funding sources, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Microsoft, Adobe, and Amazon. She received her Ph.D. from Boston University’s Computer Science Department and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in The University of Texas at Austin’s Computer Science Department.
