Undergraduates and graduates students seeking an in-depth summer research
experience should consider our programs at HERL. HERL offers:



   - A ten-week paid research and development program within the Human
   Engineering Research Laboratories of the University of Pittsburgh and US
   Department of Veterans Affairs
   - HERL provides programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation
   (NSF), National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and
   Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), and US Department of Veterans Affairs.
   - HERL also offers the ELeVATE program for veterans, cadets, and
   military/veteran dependents through the support of generous donors.
   - Emphasis of HERL?s programs is on research and development in the
   rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology fields



In addition to full participation in an on-going HERL research and/or
development project, students are presented with numerous opportunities for
personal and professional development. Participants will write a project
paper, develop a poster, and compete in an elevator pitch competition based
on their research or development assignment.  The Summer Intern program
concludes with a Final Symposium and HERL Open House where the winners of
the best paper, poster, and elevator pitch are recognized, and members of
the public are welcome to meet students, observe demonstrations, and learn
first hand about some of the activities in HERL.

Title:
Beyond Function: Inclusive Design for Empowering Experiences

Abstract:
Imagine navigating daily experiences without full control of your movement
or senses. Assistive technologies (AT) often focus narrowly on functional
restoration, overlooking holistic human needs. My research introduces an
inclusive design philosophy that moves beyond utilitarian assistance to
transform interactions for people with disabilities. I leverage approaches
like hands-free interfaces, immersive VR, haptics, and conversational AI to
create technologies that cater not just to functional limitations, but to
the psychological, emotional, and sensory aspects of experience. Through
participatory design and mixed-methods evaluations, we have built systems
enabling creative expression, seamless communication, virtual exploration,
and enriched sensory engagement with computers. This human-centric
methodology sets a new standard for assistive technology, augmenting
functional capabilities while resonating emotionally. It pushes the
boundaries of inclusive design to empower, include, and bring joy to those
often excluded. We stand at the cusp of a new era where technology moves
from isolation to connection, from limitation to liberation, from
disability to possibility. The future is one where inclusive technology
dissolves the line between ability and disability to promote universal
empowerment and equity.

Bio:
Atieh Taheri is a PhD Candidate at UC Santa Barbara, working under the
supervision of Professor Misha Sra at Human-AI Integration Lab. Her
research, characterized by its interdisciplinary nature, aims to redefine
the field of assistive technology (AT) by incorporating principles of
generative AI. Taheri's scholarly pursuit is marked by a shift from
conventional AT design, adopting a holistic and inclusive design philosophy
that extends beyond just functional capabilities. Her notable achievements
include developing an innovative hands-free video game input technique,
honored with the Student Game Competition Award for Innovative Interfaces
at CHI 2021, creating tools for artistic self-expression as well as
enhancing interactions with conversational AI agents, receiving the
People's Choice Best Poster Award at UIST 2023. Extending her expertise
into virtual reality, Taheri is pushing the boundaries of AT, focusing on
user experiences that provide assistance to individuals with motor
impairments and bridging significant gaps in current AT solutions. Her
methodology, combining quantitative and qualitative research, actively
involves diverse user groups, ensuring her solutions meet real-world needs.
Collaborations with industry leaders like Google and Apple further
demonstrate her commitment to practical, inclusive technology. Taheri's
technical expertise and her deep understanding of accessibility's
transformative power reflect her dedication to creating technologies that
are inclusive for all. Her contributions are shaping a more accessible,
inclusive future in technology.

Greetings,

My name is Paul Ezeamii,  and I am a PhD student at the Rochester Institute
of Technology. I am conducting a research study to understand the
experiences of PhD students with disabilities in computing and information
science fields, or related domains.



Specifically, we are interested in hearing from students with mobility
impairments, motor impairments, or learning disabilities such as dyslexia,
dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADD/ADHD, auditory processing disorder, autism
spectrum disorder, or similar. This study is focused on students who have
been enrolled in their doctoral program within the last 10 years, whether
they are currently enrolled or not.



We want to hear about successes and challenges with conducting research,
using assistive technologies, interacting with faculty, attending
conferences, and other aspects of the graduate school journey. We seek
perspectives from disabled PhD students in computing because it can provide
invaluable insights to help identify and address issues.



Participants will be compensated at $30/hr. Interviews can be in person or
via Zoom.

We will have guest speakers from Microsoft Research India joining us  
remotely for next week's accessibility lunch. Abstract: Empowering Diverse  
Learning through SEEDS This presentation explores SEEDS, a research project  
designed to enhance educational accessibility for children with vision  
impairments (CVIs) in India. SEEDS (Scalable Educational Experiences with  
Digital Scaffolding), created in collaboration with Vision Empower, is a  
voice-based educational platform for CVIs. It integrates an Android Teacher  
App, an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system, and a website for content  
management, facilitating interactive STEM education. A study with 29  
visually impaired students demonstrated SEEDS' capacity to engage students  
and support collaboration, despite connectivity challenges. This talk will  
explore the journey of SEEDS from conception to field studies, highlighting  
the technological innovations, collaborative efforts, and the learning  
experiences they facilitate for the CVI community. Speakers: Roshni Poddar  
is a Research Fellow at Microsoft Research Lab India (MSRI). She received  
her undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Engineering from PES  
University, Bangalore, India. Her passion lies in co-designing, building,  
and evaluating systems to facilitate learning, creativity, and  
mixed-ability collaboration with people from disability communities. She  
loves to paint and play table tennis. She is applying to PhD programs this  
fall! :) Tarini Naik is a Research Fellow at Microsoft Research Lab India

Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore, India.

for a workshop on the importance of sidewalk data and a tutorial on Project
Sidewalk <https://makeabilitylab.cs.washington.edu/projects/sidewalk/>, a
tool that allows you to enrich sidewalk data with accessibility
information. Project sidewalk is a project of the Make Ability Lab at the
University of Washington and currently has data for 11 cities,

We will have Zainab Iftikhar, a PhD candidate from Brown University,  
joining us as guest speaker remotely for the next accessibility lunch.

work on mental health accessibility and the need to recognize the absence  
of mental health services as a disability. In contrast to psychosocial  
disability, they will discuss the concept of "access to care" disability  
that pertains more to institutional or systemic barriers rather than an  
individual's psychological impairment. It signifies the challenges  
individuals face in obtaining necessary mental health support due to  
structural limitations within healthcare systems. The talk will explore  
research on alternate ways to make mental health support accessible by

abstract below: From Immersion to Inclusion: The New Frontier of Accessible  
Human-VR Interaction In the rapidly evolving realm of Virtual Reality (VR),  
immersion stands as a hallmark, offering users unparalleled experiences  
that blur the lines between physical reality and virtual reality. Yet, for  
a significant portion of our population, namely individuals with physical  
disabilities, full immersion remains an elusive dream. In this talk, I will  
delve into this pressing challenge, spotlighting the pivotal role HCI plays  
in bridging this divide. As immersive technologies become more and more  
pervasive, it is imperative that HCI researchers and professionals pioneer  
solutions that are not just innovative but also inclusive. This  
presentation will explore the current landscape of VR accessibility,  
highlight the barriers faced by individuals with physical disabilities, and  
underscore the transformative potential of HCI-driven solutions. By  
championing inclusivity in VR design and interaction paradigms, we can

Hi everyone, We have Tamanna Motahar, a PhD candidate at the University of  
Utah, joining us in-person tomorrow at noon in NSH 4201. Please find the  
talk abstract below: Abstract: Spinal Cord Injury is one of the leading  
causes of severe motor disability, resulting in abrupt and dramatic changes  
in an individual's life and mobility, requiring the use of a power  
wheelchair, and adopting new health activities. With their reduced  
functional ability, these health activities are complex, and difficult to  
track; however, well-informed and tailored technological solutions can  
support them. Although personal informatics or self-tracking technologies,  
such as activity trackers and food trackers, enable individuals to monitor  
and track multiple aspects of their lives, little is known about the needs  
and potential of these tools for this particular population. Unfortunately,  
contemporary PI research focuses on people with motor disabilities as a  
monolithic group, failing to distinguish the needs of people with severe  
impairments. My research aims to bridge this gap by employing a  
user-centric lens to expand PI research by answering the question: How can  
personal informatics research address the needs, challenges, and  
expectations of people with a severe motor disability? My work provides an  
understanding of the current state of PI research for people with motor  
disabilities, and details the factors to consider when designing a PI  
system that addresses the needs of this highly underrepresented group. Best

Hi everyone, We will have Prof. Garreth Tigwell from Rochester University  
joining us at noon remotely tomorrow. Please find the talk details below:  
Title: Addressing the Big Challenge of Inaccessible Design Abstract: We use  
many apps and websites daily to fulfill tasks in our personal and  
professional lives. However, the unfortunate reality is that many of these  
digital services are not accessible to disabled people. Understanding the  
different factors causing inaccessible design will allow us to develop more  
effective solutions to support accessible design processes. Dr. Tigwell  
will share current research his group has been working on that involves  
investigating the various challenges designers and developers face. He will  
also share ideas on how we can solve these challenges to help designers  
improve the accessibility of their work. Increasing the accessibility of  
digital spaces not only benefits disabled people, but also people

Hi everyone, For next week's accessibility lunch, we have Kyrie Zhixuan  
Zhou joining us remotely from UIUC. Please find the talk details below:  
Talk title: Can Accessibility Research Impact Real-World Software  
Accessibility? Design, Education, and Governance Talk info: Academics have  
devoted significant efforts to researching software accessibility and  
assistive technologies. However, myriad accessibility pitfalls are still  
present in software in the wild. What should we do? Kyrie Zhou argues that  
accessibility research and industrial practices are often siloed, leading  
to suboptimal outcomes. Drawing on his published and ongoing accessibility  
research, he will present how researchers may impact real-world design,  
education, and governance of software accessibility. Research can be  
translated into practical design guidelines for designers. Research can be  
translated into educational materials to teach next-generation designers  
about accessibility. Research can be translated into policy recommendations  
to inform legislation and regulation. This pragmatic approach has the  
potential to reduce the gap between numerous accessibility research and  
persisting accessibility issues in software, but challenges remain. Speaker  
bio: Kyrie Zhixuan Zhou is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Information  
Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research  
interests are broadly in tech accessibility, tech ethics, and tech  
education. He aspires to design, govern, and teach about ICT/AI experience

Hi everyone, We have Brianna Wimer joining us in-person (NSH 4201) tomorrow  
noon. Please find the talk details below: Talk info: There has been a  
growing interest in making data visualizations more accessible, yet the  
focus has predominantly been on the Blind and Low-Vision community, often  
neglecting other disability groups. Brianna will discuss the current  
application of accessible data visualizations for underrepresented  
communities and how we can broaden our understanding and scope of what  
accessible data visualizations entail to be more inclusive. The ultimate  
objective is to enhance overall accessibility, ensuring that advancements  
in data visualization are inclusive of all individuals with disabilities.

Graphics.] Speaker bio: Brianna Wimer is a Ph.D. student in Computer  
Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. She is also a  
visiting researcher at the University of Washington's Make4All Lab. Her  
research focuses on designing, implementing, and assessing accessible data  
representations that enhance the accessibility of data visualizations for  
individuals with disabilities. Her ongoing projects focus on devising  
accessible ways to represent text-dense diagrams utilizing generative AI  
technologies. Brianna has been recognized as a 2023 Google Ph.D. Fellow.  
She received her B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Alabama.
