It was our 8" lateral line that serves 6555 Penn Ave that failed. The
line broke in several places between the PWSA main and our valve for
isolating our building. Because PWSA left water on to the main
yesterday until 7:00 PM, the road has been undermined almost to the
middle of the street. In addition to the water line, the following
utilities have been affected:
<br>
<br>
1. A PWSA sewer line approximately 17 feet deep in the street.
Although it is PWSA's position that the water line failure caused the
sewer line to break, the backhoe operator for Ruthrauff-Sauer believes
that the sewer line had failed prior to the water line break with the
scouring affect of the water line break only making an existing problem
worse. This could be an important issue if PWSA decides that the
repair of the sewer line is Carnegie Mellon's responsibility.
<br>
<br>
2. A 4000 VAC Duquesne Light ductbank providing power to buildings
along Penn Ave. including 6555. Duquesne Light crews were still trying
to figure out how to isolate these lines to minimize the extent of the
outage needed to make repairs. It is clear though that 6555 will be
without power for at least several hours when the repairs will be
made. Because the ductbank has broken, all work has stopped in the
hole until Duquesne Light kills power to these lines.

<br>
3. Undetermined Verizon phone and data lines in the hole.
